dialogue between Black women
dialogue between Black women is a short play by Korinn Annette Jefferies that explores the vulnerability Black women are often forced to conceal. in the play, three Black women are compelled to confront, process, and overcome obstacles that vary from systematic, to subconscious.
I began writing dialogue in 2016, and by fall of 2017, I obtained a cast and crew to begin production with. in February 2018, the show premiered at The Artist Bloc in Greensboro, NC. after taking the show to the Black Theatre Network Conference 2018 in Memphis, TN as a staged reading, we brought the play back to Greensboro in October 2018 with a new cast.
the first time we produced the show, I was not only the director and the playwright, but one of the three actresses as well. this was a huge challenge for me, and in an effort to have the most comprehensive experience possible, it was suggested that I film all of our rehearsals. so I did. every single one. every single minute. when I decided to step out of the role, we continued to film our rehearsals because we wanted to share the process of and the thoughts behind dialogue between Black women with everyone, even if they didn’t get to see the show.
the play was about process. and the process was a reflection of the play.
